Get to know Sam
To tell you about myself I’ll start with this story; once in high school a teacher called me a slug.
Well really what he said on the last day of an intro film class was, he thought I was just a slug, but excitedly told me I’d proved him wrong. He mistaken wrong about my spotty attendance, but what he didn’t realize was that I hadn’t been lazy, I’d just been waiting to find something that truly lit me up.
That something was filmmaking.
I’ve always chased what excites and challenges me, so it’s only natural that storytelling became my passion. Of course, I appreciate all aspects of filmmaking, but nothing fills me with as much excitement as directing. Specifically, working with actors. To write a character, shape it together with the actors, then see it come to life before me feels like magic. For me, directing is a perfect balance of individual vision and collaboration.
When I care about something, I’m all in. That’s what filmmaking has taught me most, when the story matters, so does every detail. In the future I look forward to perfecting my craft through constant practice. I want to make films that explore familiar struggles and human connection. Ideally I’ll gain the opportunity to attempt different genres like dark comedies and experimental. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll write a musical. Whatever it is, I truly believe that as long as I’m lucky enough to create, I’m lucky.
